That three minute voice note, read for you (the VOICENOTE setup)
Attach the voice note, paste one prompt, and get back what they want from you, every date and amount in their own words, and where it was too unclear to hear.
- a voice note and one prompt, in the chat app you already have
- on a 2 minute 6 second sample: all 7 dates, amounts and asks, back in 1 minute 18 seconds
- the catch: names come back spelt by ear
This is the setup from the reel. Somebody sends three minutes of audio when one line would do. Somewhere in there is a date, an amount and a favour you've just agreed to, and you're in a meeting, or on a bus, or it's 11 at night and the house is asleep. This gets the important part out without playing it.
What you need
- The voice note. In WhatsApp, long-press it, tap Forward or Share, and share it to the app, or save it as an audio file first.
- The free ChatGPT or Gemini app on your phone, whichever one takes an audio file on your phone. Attach it with the paperclip or the plus.
The prompt
Attach the voice note, tap copy on the box below, paste it, send.
This is a voice note someone sent me. I don't have time to listen to all of it.
1. In three lines: what do they want from me?
2. Every date, time, amount of money and request in it, each with their exact words in quotes.
3. Anything they asked me to do, and by when.
4. If a part is unclear or hard to hear, tell me roughly where it is (how far in) instead of guessing what they said.
Step 4 is the one that matters. On my run one line got misheard, and the answer said that part was unclear, about two fifths of the way in, instead of making something up. If yours flags a part, play just that part.
What it gets wrong
Names come back spelt by ear. On my run "Nani" came back as "Nanny" and Siliguri as "Silliguri". Annoying, harmless.
Anything you're going to act on (a time, an amount, a date), check it against the audio once. It's quick when you know which ten seconds to play.
The catch
A voice note is somebody else's voice, and often somebody else's family news. Send only the ones from people who'd be fine with it, and skip anything about health or money trouble that isn't yours to share. What you attach goes to the company's servers, and a temporary chat or deleting it later doesn't unsend it.
The measured run
This was not a real voice note, so you know what you're reading. I wrote a made-up one (an aunt, a birthday lunch, a station pickup, a share of the caterer's advance, a kilo of barfi) and had a computer voice read it: 2 minutes 6 seconds. One run, timed, on 20 October 2026. Not on the phone app: on my desktop the audio was turned into text first, then I sent the exact prompt above with that text through OpenAI's GPT-6 Sol from the Codex command line. On your phone the app does both at once, so your time will be different.
- Time: 1 minute 18 seconds from start to the last line (56 seconds to turn it into text, 22 for the answer), against 2 minutes 6 seconds just to listen to it once
- Found: all 7 things that mattered, the pickup time, the "tell me by Wednesday" deadline, the lunch, the advance, my share, the barfi and the speaker, each with the words quoted
- Unclear: one line, flagged, not guessed
- Wrong: the spellings above
A real voice note, with traffic behind it and someone talking fast, will be harder than mine. By hand: not timed. I'm not going to guess a number for you.
Where the longer version lives
The Rabbit Hole is the community where I post the setups, the ones that worked and the ones that didn't.
